BPBD Bali: Disaster Preparedness Certificate (SKB) adds value to hotels

Denpasar (National Archipelagic Wire) - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bali Province has asked tourism accommodation businesses to immediately obtain a Disaster Preparedness Certificate (SKB) to increase business added value and destination competitiveness.

"Certification is an investment that has added value, especially for tourism accommodation. At international events, several travel agents definitely ask about this," said Head of the Prevention and Preparedness Division of BPBD Bali, Ida Bagus Gede Widnyana Putra.

He said at the Workshop on the Development of a Disaster Certification Recognition Mechanism (SKB) for the Tourism Business World in Denpasar, Wednesday, that so far accommodation that meets disaster preparedness has been the security guarantee sought by tourists and international travel agents, so they are encouraged to have this certificate.

"Hotels that already have a certificate can immediately attach it, and that will automatically convince the agent that the hotel is worthy of ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors," he said.

BPBD Bali explained that they have a very complex risk assessment with 14 potential disaster threats that might occur, or the equivalent of all types of disaster threats that exist in Indonesia.

Considering that Bali's economic structure is heavily supported by the tourism sector, the region's exposure to the threat of disaster is a high risk that must be continuously anticipated.

Therefore, the Bali Provincial Government took the initiative to pioneer a preparedness certification program in recent years, considering that at that time there were no technical instructions from the central government regarding strengthening preparedness in the tourism sector.

The program, which continues to update its governance and regulations together with the Tourism Office, tourism associations and non-governmental organizations, is targeted to run sustainably.

However, even though the regulations are mandatory through regional regulations and governor's regulations, BPBD Bali recorded that until mid-2026, only 117 hotels and tourism accommodations had been certified, dominated by star hotels in Badung Regency.

According to Widnyana, this low achievement occurs due to the implementation of regulations that have not been accompanied by sanctions, and there are still challenges in terms of understanding management which has not made disaster risk reduction a priority.
