PHRI Reveals the Reason Why Hotels in Nusa Penida Are Quiet Even though There Are Many Tourists Visiting

The tourist area of ​​Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali, is busy with tourists during the holiday season or high season. According to data from the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Klungkung, tourist visits to Nusa Penida can reach 4,000 people per day.

Even so, the number of visits is not directly proportional to the occupancy rate of accommodation in Nusa Penida. Hundreds of hotels in the tourist area are actually quiet with an average occupancy of only 30 percent.

"The average occupancy is 30 percent. Sometimes for small hotels it can only be 10 percent. But big hotels are always full because the facilities are complete. There are restaurants, nightlife, gym and other supporting facilities," said Chairman of PHRI Klungkung, I Putu Darmaya, Wednesday (15/6/2026).

"Meanwhile, small hotels generally don't have restaurants and the service is lacking. So, they only provide a place to stay," he added.

Based on PHRI Klungkung data, currently there are around 460 lower middle class hotels recorded in Nusa Penida. However, this number is predicted to be much higher if you count accommodation that has not been officially recorded.

Darmaya said that the majority of tourists who flock to Nusa Penida are currently dominated by Asian markets such as China and India. Most tourists who travel to Nusa Penida only travel for one day without staying overnight.

"A lot of day trippers come from China and India, but most of those who stay overnight are from Europe. Unfortunately now day trippers are busy, but they don't stay overnight. Even though if it was just a day trip, maybe they would just throw rubbish here," he added.

Location, Setting & Neighborhood Access

According to Darmaya, the economic effects will be much more pronounced for local communities if tourists spend the night in Nusa Penida. To increase hotel occupancy, Darmaya assesses the importance of improving hotel infrastructure and internal facilities.

Apart from that, Darmaya said, inadequate public infrastructure is also the reason why tourists are reluctant to spend the night in Nusa Penida. He gave the example of the lack of street lighting and entertainment facilities so that there are not many activities that tourists can do if they stay overnight in Nusa Penida.

"Our infrastructure is still not good. The lighting is not good, the streets are dark at night. Supporting facilities such as places to walk are also lacking, especially night entertainment. Night entertainment also cannot take place because the hotel occupancy is empty," explained Darmaya.
