Chinese Consul General Criticizes Bali-Nusra Tourism Security: Pickpockets, Accidents, Illegal Guides

The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China Denpasar held a Travel Security Coordination Meeting for Chinese Tourists at Tsinghua South East Asia Center Bali, Kura Kura Bali, Denpasar, Tuesday (21/7/2026). The meeting discussed various security aspects in line with the increasing number of tourists from China visiting Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Latest Situation & Advisory Details

Deputy Consul General of China in Denpasar, Zhu Yu, said that the number of Chinese tourists coming to Bali in 2025 will reach around 540 thousand people, an increase of 19 percent compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, from January to May 2026, Chinese tourist visits have reached around 243 thousand people, an increase of 11 percent on an annual basis.

Apart from Bali, the number of visits has also increased in Labuan Bajo, NTT. More than 58 thousand Chinese tourists have taken boat tours in 2025. This number has doubled compared to 2024.

By the end of May this year, the figure had exceeded 35 thousand people, equivalent to 60 percent of last year's total.

Affected Corridors & Port/Flight Status

"Consular protection efforts implemented by our Consulate General have achieved positive results," said Zhu Yu.

Zhu explained that tourists from China often experience a number of incidents while on holiday in Bali or NTT, firstly, from potential dangers in terms of traffic safety.

Over the past year there have been 25 cases of traffic accidents involving 120 Chinese citizens. One of them was in August 2025, a ship accident occurred at Sanur Harbor which claimed the lives of two Chinese tourists.

Safety Restrictions & Operational Directives

"The most serious was an accident in the northern part of Bali Province on November 14 2025. This was the most fatal traffic accident since our Consulate General was established, as well as the most serious traffic accident involving Chinese citizens in Bali in more than ten years," he explained.

He gave a note to related parties to pay serious attention by checking and supervising drivers who work beyond working hours and vehicles that are not officially registered.
