Can you believe it? It was on the 21st July 2025 that the Bali Provincial Government began demolition work at the beloved surf hotspot.
What Has Opened
Now, leaders have confirmed that redevelopment work will begin before the year is out.
It was promised by Bali officials at the time of the initial demolition work that Bingin Beach in Uluwatu would be redeveloped into a more formal tourist destination.
This sparked outcries from the local community and loyal Bingin lovers that the world-famous surf and vacation destination was perfect as it was. The Bali Provincial Government demolished more than 40 buildings on the Bingin Beach cliffside, citing spatial planning and building violations, and in some cases tax evasion too.
In the last few days, the Badung Regency Government has confirmed that it will begin developing the Bingin Beach area in 2026. Now the tender process has entered the final stages, which is the objection period; the first phase of physical work is targeted to begin in July-August 2026.
Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Agency, I Nyoman Karyasa, stated that the first phase of development has entered the implementation phase now that the tender winner has been announced.
The initial phase of development will focus on clearing the remains of demolished buildings, constructing safe access to the beach, and providing basic facilities. He stated that the work will continue until the end of 2026.
Rooms, Wellness & Architectural Highlights
He explained, “The process is underway. The tender winner has been named, and we are now entering the objection period. This means work will begin between July and August.” For tourists planning on visiting Bingin Beach from now until the end of the year, here at Regional Travel Monitors we advise you to expect differing levels of disruption…the bulldozers are moving in.
Karyasa confirmed that the first phase of the redevelopment focused on the area’s landscape after the government demolished dozens of buildings last year. The remaining debris, which still looks disorganized and has been deemed by many as unsafe for the public and dangerous to the environment, will be cleared to improve the area’s appearance.
He shared, “First, we’ll tidy up the remaining debris from the demolition. After that, we’ll build an access road down to the beach, then install utilities like water, toilets, and plant vegetation.” He was also able to confirm what has been rumoured to be happening in the subsequent phases of the development at Bingin Beach.
Karyasa explained that the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) will also conduct land preparation in preparation for subsequent development.
A range of spaces and properties will be prepared for use by businesses in accordance with the area’s mapped land use function. “We’re preparing the land. If there’s space that can be used for a food and beverage outlet, we’ll prepare it, but that’s not the first stage. That’s a later stage.”
He was clear that Karyasa emphasized that Bingin Beach’s condition after the renovation will not return to its ‘previous state’ whereby buildings were constructed without permits.
Location, Setting & Neighborhood Access
The renovation will comply with spatial planning regulations, ensuring that permitted activities and buildings align with the area’s function.
Much of the original infrastructure at Bingin Beach was built before the tourist boom, and many of the original beach shacks and basic beach buildings were slowly renovated over decades, which is one of the reasons why the government claimed that the buildings were breaking spatial planning laws.
Moving forward, businesses operating in Bingin Beach will have to comply with the land use orders.
Karyasa confirmed that no hotels will be built in the area, as had been the fear of many local people. He shared, “Accommodations like villas or hotels will not be built there.
Only activities that are in accordance with the spatial plan will be permitted, such as food and beverage outlets.”
Concluding, “Our hope is that this area can be well-managed, providing maximum benefit to the community, while still adhering to applicable regulations.”
