The Wae Rebo tourist destination in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is reopening for tourist visits starting today. The destination which is usually called heaven above the clouds was previously closed since August 15 2026 or almost two weeks due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7.
"Reopening starting today," said Chairman of the Wae Rebo Cultural Conservation Institute, Mikael Tonso, Tuesday (1/9/2026) morning.
Previously, Wae Rebo was temporarily closed due to potential landslides on the trekking route after an earthquake rocked the Flores area starting on August 15.
By considering the results of monitoring post-earthquake conditions, the party decided to conduct a limited and gradual reopening of Wae Rebo tourist visiting activities.
"In its implementation, the condition of the trekking route, the environment and natural conditions will continue to be monitored for the safety of visitors and the public," explained Mikael.
"If conditions in the field are deemed unsafe again, visiting activities can be stopped or closed again at any time," he added.
He appealed to all visitors to follow the directions of officers and guides and consider travel conditions before visiting.
"Life safety is the main priority," said Mikael.
Wae Rebo is at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level (masl). Wae Rebo is usually called heaven above the clouds. There are seven traditional houses that have become icons of this tourist village, namely the cone-shaped Mbaru Niang.
Wae Rebo also offers beautiful natural landscapes and unique culture. Tourists can also feel the hospitality of local residents when they arrive there.
