Heavy Rain and Strong Winds, Wae Rebo Temporarily Closed

The Wae Rebo tourist destination in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is temporarily closed due to bad weather. There was heavy rain, strong winds and thick fog in the area.

"Yes (temporary closure)," said Chairman of the Wae Rebo Cultural Conservation Institute, Mikael Tonso, Tuesday (21/7/2026) morning.

The temporary closure of the area nicknamed heaven above the clouds began on Monday (20/7/2026). Wae Rebo will reopen for tourist visits if the weather improves.

"It's still raining heavily now," said Mikael.

He said the temporary closure was carried out because bad weather in the area had the potential to cause landslides on the trekking route to Wae Rebo. Landslides often occur when bad weather hits the area.

"So the trip to Wae Rebo was postponed for the time being for our collective safety and security," said Mikael.

Wae Rebo is at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level (masl). Wae Rebo is usually called heaven above the clouds. There are seven traditional houses that have become icons of this tourist village, namely the cone-shaped Mbaru Niang.

Wae Rebo also offers beautiful natural landscapes and unique culture. Tourists also feel the hospitality of local residents when they arrive there.
