Canggu to Pererenan Coastal Corridor Infrastructure Upgrades Complete: Stormwater Drainage, Pedestrian Paths & Subterranean Cabling

Daily commuters, nomadic teleworkers and international visitors traveling between Canggu and the residential enclave of Pererenan are benefiting from a dramatic improvement in traffic flow following the commissioning of Badung Regency's major coastal infrastructure project. Carried out under the aegis of Executive Decree No. 114/PUPR/2026, this 18-month civil engineering project thoroughly rehabilitated the saturated roads of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, Jalan Munduk Catu, Jalan Nelayan and the Pantai Lima coastline.

Underground stormwater pipes and monsoon resilience

The top priority of the Public Works Department (PUPR Badung) was to resolve the problem of recurring seasonal flooding. With tropical downpours regularly saturating traditional agricultural ditches, key intersections frequently found themselves submerged. The engineering teams installed more than 4.8 kilometers of prefabricated reinforced concrete underground scuppers (section 1.5 m x 1.5 m). This drainage network evacuates rainwater to maritime outlets equipped with sludge traps and oil separators, thus protecting residential areas and the rice fields of Subak.

Burial of dry networks and visual sanitation

As part of a comprehensive urban beautification plan, overhead electrical cables, transformers and suspended fiber optic bundles have been permanently removed along a 3.2 kilometer corridor. All of the networks were transferred into waterproof underground technical gutters equipped with draft chambers every 50 meters. This disappearance of obsolete poles secures public space during storms and restores all its visual purity to the Balinese landscape.

Continuous sidewalks and development of soft mobility

To ensure pedestrian safety, the project incorporates continuous 1.80 meter wide sidewalks coated with permeable volcanic basalt slabs on either side of Jalan Batu Bolong and Jalan Pantai Pererenan. Cycle paths reserved for electric bicycles and scooters are materialized by a reflective thermoplastic resin, creating a continuous and illuminated coastal promenade connecting the beach of Echo Beach to that of Pererenan and Pantai Lima.

Intelligent traffic management and time saving

In order to alleviate historical congestion, the Badung Transport Department (Dishub) has installed intelligent cameras that automatically read license plates and variable message signs. During evening peak hours (4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. WITA), a one-way loop is activated on Jalan Munduk Catu and Jalan Nelayan. Telemetry readings confirm a reduction of 42% in travel times between the heart of Canggu and Pererenan.
