Foreign tourists take part in a special competition on August 17 at Legian Beach

Badung (National Archipelagic Wire) - Dozens of foreign nationals (WNA) who are in Bali took part in various typical competitions on August 17 such as eating crackers, sack races and tug-of-war to celebrate the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence at Legian Beach, Badung Regency.

"This afternoon we are holding a Bali Friendship Community event, we are inviting members and non-members, the public also on the beach so that everyone can join in, these are very Indonesian competitions such as eating crackers, tug-of-war, sack run and marble run," said the founder of the Bali Friendship Community, Peter James, in Badung Regency, Monday.

Peter said that through various competitions that foreigners took part in with the local community, they could understand that Indonesia adheres to a culture of togetherness and mutual cooperation.

Peter explained that this typical August 17 gathering managed to attract the attention of almost 100 participants, exceeding the capacity of routine community gatherings which are usually only attended by 40 to 50 people.

To further enliven the activity, the committee gave unique prizes in the form of crackers to the winners so that foreigners could get to know and enjoy this typical Indonesian food.

After the competition session was finished, the activity continued with the formation of small groups for "deep talk" sessions or sharing life stories between community members, which is the essence of strengthening friendship in Bali.

The presence of this competition makes a deep impression on tourists and expatriates who live on the Island of the Gods.

One participant from England, Francesca, admitted that she was enthusiastic about being able to take part in the celebration of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence directly on the beach after attending the flag ceremony at her place of work as an English teacher.

"This is a great way to learn more about Indonesian history and culture, it's really fun to be able to celebrate here with new friends," he said.

Of the various competitions, Francesca admitted that she liked the cracker eating competition the most because during her 2.5 years in Bali, crackers were one of her favorite side dishes.
