Sumbawa Opens a New Chapter in Indonesia's Tourism Economy

Sumbawa is increasingly being positioned as part of Indonesia's next wave of destination development, offering a combination of beaches, marine landscapes, culture and relatively less-developed tourism territory.
The island sits between Lombok and Flores but has historically received less international tourism attention than Bali or neighboring Lombok. That creates both an opportunity and a challenge: Sumbawa has room to develop, but it must build connectivity and visitor services without repeating the environmental and infrastructure pressures experienced by mature destinations.
The broader national investment strategy supports this direction. The Tourism Ministry has called for investment to be distributed more evenly across Indonesia's priority destinations and Tourism Special Economic Zones because the majority of tourism investment remains concentrated in Jakarta and Bali.
Sumbawa fits the diversification story because its tourism assets are different from the dense resort environment of southern Bali. Coastal landscapes, surf, marine tourism, rural communities and cultural experiences can support a more dispersed visitor economy.
The development opportunity is not simply to build more hotels. A successful destination needs a complete ecosystem: transportation, accommodation, restaurants, guides, attractions, digital information, health and safety infrastructure and reliable connectivity.
Sumbawa's position between established destinations can also create itinerary opportunities. Travelers visiting Lombok or Flores can potentially extend trips to Sumbawa, while domestic travelers can explore the island as a destination in its own right.
The island's development should also consider environmental carrying capacity from the beginning. Less-developed destinations have an advantage because they can establish tourism-management standards before visitor volumes become difficult to control.
That means zoning, waste management, water management, coastal protection and community participation should be treated as tourism infrastructure rather than afterthoughts.
For investors, Sumbawa can be attractive precisely because the destination is still developing. Early investment can help shape accommodation supply and tourism services. But early-stage markets also carry greater infrastructure and demand-development risk than mature destinations.
The national tourism strategy increasingly recognizes that investment needs to generate more than rooms. Cruise facilities, attractions, accessibility infrastructure and diversified tourism businesses can create stronger economic linkages.
Sumbawa's long-term potential therefore depends on coordinated development. If tourism grows through a combination of local entrepreneurship, responsible investment and improved connectivity, the island can become a stronger component of Indonesia's eastern tourism economy.
The opportunity is not to turn Sumbawa into another Bali. Its value lies in offering a different destination proposition while remaining connected to the wider Indonesian tourism network.
