High above the riverbank in the lush foothills connecting Langkat to the volcanic Karo highlands, Karo Highland Herbal Usadha & Oukup Pavilion preserves one of Indonesia's most potent and revered indigenous healing traditions. Constructed in the spirit of Batak Karo vernacular architecture with pitched timber gables, woven bamboo walls, and fragrant pinewood trusses, the pavilion is enveloped by a living botanical conservatory where rare medicinal plants thrive under the shade of ancient canopy trees. The air is instantly intoxicating, dense with the sweet, pungent perfume of bubbling copper kettles brewing ginger root, wild vetiver, torch ginger, and eucalyptus.

At the heart of the experience lies the traditional Oukup—an ancient Karonese thermal vitality therapy celebrated across Northern Sumatra for its deep cleansing properties. Guests are wrapped in natural hand-woven textiles and seated inside private cedarwood steam chambers, where the vapor of more than thirty wild rainforest botanicals—foraged sustainably from the Gunung Leuser buffer zone—is released. As gentle botanical heat opens pores and draws out lingering fatigue, experienced Karo practitioners apply warming balms of wild mountain turmeric and wintergreen oil along traditional meridian pathways. The treatment concludes with a refreshing rinse in cool highland spring water scented with kaffir lime and a cup of warming, spiced bandrek infused with organic palm sugar and roasted cloves.
