High on the volcanic ridges of Central Alor, the conical, thatched roofs of the Abui people—known historically as the 'Mountain People'—rise dramatically against the cobalt expanse of the Flores Sea. Desa Adat Takpala is not a sterile museum piece; it is an active ancestral redoubt where four-tiered bamboo dwellings (Fala Foka) preserve living customs spanning centuries. The Abui Usadha lineage represents an extraordinary pharmacopoeia rooted in dense montane rainforests. Here, village elders and traditional healers cultivate wild medicinal tree barks, aromatic forest resins, and endemic mountain roots, translating generational forest knowledge into profound restorative remedies.

The signature Kukus Usadha therapy commences inside a shaded bamboo platform cooled by mountain currents. Dried wild barks—including native kayu kuning and wild cinnamon—are smoldered over glowing embers inside bamboo vessels, enveloping the body in warm, purifying vapors that penetrate deep into the respiratory tract and muscles. Traditional healers follow this ceremonial fumigation with firm, intuitive palm and bamboo-joint acupressure, working warm balms infused with mountain ginger, clove oil, and crushed wild roots across long-held tension lines.
