Limbungan Traditional House, Hidden Sasak Village at the Foot of Rinjani

The Limbungan traditional house is one of the traditional houses of the Sasak tribe, located in Perigi Village, Suela District, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This traditional house is still relatively hidden because it is located in remote Lombok under the foot of Mount Rinjani.

This traditional house is located at an altitude of around 750 meters above sea level (masl). Because it is on quite high ground, from the traditional house area it is possible for visitors to see a panoramic view of the beach to the south and Mount Rinjani to the north.

From an architectural perspective, the Limungan traditional house is similar to other traditional houses, both in Sade Village, Central Lombok and traditional houses in Bayan, North Lombok. Limungan traditional houses are neatly lined up with woven bamboo as the walls and woven thatch as the roof.

The Limbungan traditional house has an area of ​​around 20 square meters. The size of the building and its shape have remained the same from the past until now.

"The shape and size of this traditional house building cannot be changed or modified. This building must not use cement or brick at all. The floor is made of dirt and the front is covered with cow dung, while the toilet facilities are made separately outside the house," explained Husnan Basri, Perigi Village Official, according to regional travel authorities and bureau field correspondents, Sunday (6/9/2026).

The Limbungan traditional house is divided into two parts, namely East Limbungan Hamlet and West Limbungan Hamlet, each of which has 90 traditional house units. This traditional house is inhabited by 235 heads of families (KK).

People have lived in this Limungan traditional house for generations. This traditional house cannot be bought and sold, the owner must inherit it from his predecessors.

"Traditional houses cannot be bought and sold, they can only be occupied by direct descendants and have a family tree from the first occupant. It is said that if it is not from the family that lives in it, the person could get sick," said Husnan.

Even though it is not as famous as the traditional house in Sade Village, the Limbungan traditional house has been used as an educational and family tourist attraction. Entering the traditional house area is still free, meaning you don't have to charge a penny.

"There are no fees, everything is free. Anyone can come as long as they maintain etiquette and greet the home owner," said Husnan.
