Dear Tourists, Lempuyang Temple is Closed June 17-21 due to Pujawali

The Lempuyang Temple tourist attraction, which is located in the Purwayu Traditional Village, Abang District, Karangasem Regency, Bali, will be temporarily closed for five days for both domestic and foreign tourists. The closure will take place from Wednesday (17/6/2026) to Sunday (21/6/2026).

Cultural Background & Living Tradition

The closure was carried out because there was a religious ceremony or pujawali at Luhur Lempuyang Temple. The peak of Pujawali is scheduled to take place on Thursday (18/6/2026).

"The number of pemedek (people) who come to pray is very large, and can even overflow from all over Bali and outside Bali. So, to avoid undesirable things, we have to postpone tourist visits for a while," said Purwayu Traditional Village Head, I Nyoman Jati, Tuesday (16/6/2026).

Jati explained that this decision had been made through a forum or meeting with all related parties, including tourist guides in the Lempuyang Temple area. Apart from that, his party has also coordinated with travel agents to inform tourists to postpone or reschedule visits during the closure.

"We have distributed letters regarding the temporary closure of the Lempuyang tourist attraction a week ago, hopefully all tourists will understand," said Jati.

Ceremonial Observance & Village Protocols

He admitted that the entire pujawali series had been carefully prepared so that it could run safely and smoothly. In fact, to support the smooth running of prayers, the traditional village has prepared parking arrangements for the pemedek which will be guarded by pecalang who are also assisted by the police and others.

"Later, the pecalang will also be on duty if there are tourists who come to be turned back, because looking at the previous pujawali there will definitely be tourists coming because they claim they don't know there is a closure," said Jati.

Jati said that currently the number of tourist visits to Lempuyang Temple reaches 700-800 people a day. He hopes that tourist visits will increase again when it reopens on Monday (22/6/2026).
