Pemuteran Village Usadha & Lontar Healing House

North Balinese usadha tradition differs meaningfully from its south Balinese counterpart: more austere, more closely connected to the agricultural calendar, and more deeply rooted in the lontar palm manuscripts that catalogued the botanical pharmacopoeia of the Buleleng kingdom across five centuries of scribal transmission. Ibu Darmi, the Pemuteran Village Healing House's senior practitioner, keeps a stack of these manuscripts — some inherited, some photographed from temple archives — as the living reference library of her practice, consulting them on quiet afternoons between sessions.

The Lontar Usadha & North Bali Pijat session opens with a brief consultation through which Ibu Darmi assesses constitution, identifying the dominant element — wind, fire, earth, or water — that the guest's presenting conditions suggest is imbalanced. She selects her jamu preparation accordingly: for wind excess, warming ginger and clove; for fire, cooling pandan and coconut water; for earth stagnation, stimulating black pepper and galangal. The pijat that follows is methodical, focused, and considerably firmer than south Balinese resort massage — a northern tradition shaped by the demands of fishing families and farm labourers, whose bodies required healing that was proportionate to the work they performed.
